The names of many tress have interesting origins. Many of the names have simply come to us from other languages. The banyan tree was called banyan tree by the Europeans when they found Banyas or Hindus members of the merchant class gathering under the tree for worship and business.

The English name, Dandelion is a corruption of the French dent de lion meaning "lion's tooth",
referring to the coarsely toothed leaves.
The cypress was first brought from the island of "Cyprus" in the Mediterranean.
